Avery opened her eyes, and saw the clear, dark blue sky above her. It was filled with stars; beautiful, silver pinpricks of light in the great velvety emptiness. The moon hung in the darkness, and a gentle breeze blew strands of her dark hair across her face. She grumpily shoved it behind her ear and picked herself up off the damp grass. Avery looked around, there were tall, dark trees surrounding her on every side. "How the hell did I get here?" she wondered out loud. The place seemed familiar, for some reason.
Quickly making up her mind, she began to stride towards the dark forest surrounding her. Sure, there were probably monsters in it, but there was something that just didn't feel right about the clearing. She could not figure out exactly what it was, but she knew that it was probably a good idea to get away from it. As soon as Avery stepped under the shadowy trees, the feeling disappeared. But then the whispering started. At first it was just a faint hiss, but the sounds slowly became an indistinct mumble. She walked faster through the trees, and as the sound intensified, another voice joined the mix. The voices were calm, soothing even, but they didn't seem to be addressing her.
Avery cracked open one green-blue eye, it had only been a dream. But the forest had seemed so real! She was lying on her bunk, and the glow the cabin's furnace bathed the room in a faint orangeish light. The mumble she had heard in her dream had been coming from her siblings, who, although Avery could not see clearly, she identified as Dawn and Leeland. She blinked twice and rubbed her eyes, trying to shake off sleep. She glanced at the clock and groaned. The numbers said that it was just after three in the morning. "What the hell, you guys? Some of us are trying to sleep!" Avery hissed. She grabbed her pillow and heaved it across the room, towards the silhouette that was Leeland. She was surprised that Leeland was actually in the cabin at this time, but she was more angry that he and Dawn had woken her up. Avery was one of the Hephaestus campers that would have liked to sleep until noon. She pulled her sheets up over her face and attempted to get back to sleep.
